Batteries, starting, and charging
4 part types · what each does and where to compare prices
- 01BatteryStarts the engine and powers electronics with the engine off. Check group size, terminal layout, and type.
- 02AlternatorCharges the battery and runs the electrical system with the engine on. Match the amperage rating and pulley.
- 03StarterTurns the engine over to start it. Remanufactured units are common and often carry a core charge.
- 04Battery cableCarries current between the battery, starter, and ground. Corroded cables cause many no-start problems.
Before you order
- Batteries are sized by group number, and cold-cranking amps should meet or exceed the original rating.
- Vehicles with start-stop usually need an AGM or EFB battery, and some need the new battery registered with a scan tool.
