Brakes and wheel bearings
6 part types · what each does and where to compare prices
- 01Brake padsThe friction material that clamps the rotor. Ceramic pads run cleaner and quieter; semi-metallic pads handle more heat.
- 02Brake rotorsThe discs the pads clamp. Front and rear are different, and size can vary by trim.
- 03Brake caliperSqueezes the pads against the rotor. Remanufactured calipers usually carry a core charge.
- 04Brake shoes and drumsRear drum brakes on many vehicles. Shoes and drums wear together.
- 05Brake master cylinderTurns pedal force into hydraulic pressure. Bench-bleed a new one before fitting it.
- 06Wheel bearing and hub assemblyLets the wheel turn on the axle. A growl that changes with speed or turning is the classic sign.
Before you order
- Brake parts can differ by trim, axle, and brake package. Check rotor diameter or the brake code on the door label if you can.
- Replace pads and rotors in axle pairs, and bed in new pads as the maker describes.
