Cooling, heating, and A/C
6 part types · what each does and where to compare prices
- 01RadiatorSheds engine heat into the air. Check core size, inlet and outlet positions, and whether a transmission cooler is built in.
- 02Water pumpCirculates coolant through the engine. On many engines it is driven by the timing belt and replaced with it.
- 03ThermostatOpens at a set temperature to let coolant reach the radiator. Use the opening temperature your engine calls for.
- 04Radiator fan assemblyPulls air through the radiator at low speed and idle.
- 05A/C compressorPumps refrigerant through the A/C system. Replacing the receiver-drier or accumulator at the same time is common practice.
- 06Heater coreA small radiator behind the dash that heats the cabin.
Before you order
- Coolant types are not interchangeable. Use the type the maker lists, and bleed air from the system after a repair.
- A/C work involves refrigerant under pressure, which in most places needs certified equipment to recover and recharge.
