Sensors and engine management
5 part types · what each does and where to compare prices
- 01Oxygen sensorReports how rich or lean the engine is running. Position (upstream or downstream, bank 1 or 2) matters.
- 02Crankshaft position sensorTells the computer engine speed and position. A failure can stop the engine from starting.
- 03Camshaft position sensorTells the computer where each camshaft is, for fuel and spark timing.
- 04Coolant temperature sensorReports engine temperature to the computer and sometimes the gauge.
- 05Knock sensorListens for detonation so the computer can retard timing.
Before you order
- A trouble code points to a circuit, not always to a bad sensor. Check the wiring and connector first.
- Oxygen sensors upstream and downstream of the converter are usually different parts.
